Fall Out Boy details Ethan Hawke feature on ‘So Much (for) Stardust’ album
When Fall Out Boy unveiled the track list to their upcoming album, So Much (for) Stardust, last week, we learned that actor Ethan Hawke guests on a song called “The Pink Seashell.” Now, the two have shared more details about the intriguing feature.
A new profile of Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump in DIY magazine reveals that “The Pink Seashell” is technically not a new song, but rather playback of a speech Hawke gives in the 1994 film Reality Bites.
In the scene, Hawke’s character tells the story of his dad taking him to a beach, giving him a pink seashell and telling him, “Son, the answers are all inside of this.”
“I realize that the shell is empty,” the speech continues. “There’s no point to any of this, it’s all just a random lottery of meaningless tragedy in a series of near escapes.”
As Wentz explains to DIY, that sentiment is something he’s struggled with.
“Every fall, I get a weird matriculation, like my parents are older, I’m older, my 14-year-old will be moving out soon,” Wentz shares.” Thinking about time speeding, I thought about that specific clip a lot because there’s a danger of going, ‘What’s the f***ing point of any of it?’ That’s a scary thought. It’s easy to think, ‘We’re in a slow march to the end.'”
Overall, making So Much (for) Stardust was an antidote to that kind of thought.
“You have to do something to break out of that,” Wentz says. “You have to do something that’s a little bit crazy.”
So Much (for) Stardust is due out March 24. It also includes the singles “Love from the Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good.”
